After training for the Coastal Delaware Marathon this spring, I learned the hard way how important it is to incorporate more than just running into any good training plan. One thing, in particular, I've started to pay attention to is my strength training and recovery. Even just a simple recovery routine can have a significant impact on performance as I learned after smashing a new PR at Rock 'n' Roll Philadelphia.

Although I've certainly improved my recovery and strength training, it may come as no surprise that I don't have the best nutritional habits, especially when it comes to post-run refreshment. Don't get me wrong, I'll always reach for water first to rehydrate, but will usually crack a beer immediately after that.

Recently, I had the opportunity to test out Now Sports BCAA Big 6 Powder which is a supplement loaded with branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) to help support muscle retention and recovery following a tough workout. Definitely a smarter choice before enjoying the obligatory post-run brew.

What are Branched-Chain Amino Acids?

So what are Branch-Chain Amino Acids? Basically, they're the building blocks of protein used in muscle synthesis. There are some studies that suggest that BCAAs taken before or after exercise may decrease exercise-related muscle-soreness and promote muscle development which is why BCAA supplements have become so popular. BCAAs are not made in the human body so you can only get them through your diet.

Why NOW?

I've tried a few protein supplements and BCAA products in the past but what drew me to NOW was what's actually in the product. First, it's all-natural. I just prefer to take supplements that are all-natural because, personally, I'd just rather get my nutrients from natural sources when possible.

The other big thing I've noticed about NOW as opposed to whey protein supplements I've taken in the past is that NOW has been way easier on my digestion. Maybe TMI but I tend to feel pretty bloated and gassy after a whey protein shake and that has not been the case at all with NOW BCAA Big 6.

The Flavors

Currently, NOW BCAA Big 6 is available in two flavors, watermelon, and grape. I was lucky enough to try both but grape was a definite favorite for me. Both flavors for me but I'm just not as big of a fan of watermelon in general. Mixing one scoop with 16oz of water as recommended is definitely gives a powerful flavor but I actually really enjoyed it.

I'm glad I've still got plenty of NOW BCAA Big 6 in stock, especially as I get ready to nail down my marathon training plans for the spring. Strength training and active recovery are still a work in progress for me so I'm looking forward to having the additional support.

Cheers!
